How to Make Prayer Requests

Use Paul’s appeal to Philemon as a model for presenting requests to God. “I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing to do. But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me–Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of the Lord Jesus. I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. . . . Please do me this favor for the Lord’s sake (Philemon 8-10, 20 NLT).

Here’s what we learned:

–Be polite. Ask nicely.

–Don’t demand. Request, boldly.

–GIve a moral, logical backing for your request. “It is the right thing to do.”

–Appeal to God’s kindness and love. Love motivates God. “For God so loved the world that he gave . . . (John 3:16).”

—Approach the Lord with humility. “I’m an old man and a prisoner. . .”

–Make your request for the Lord’s sake.
